Solar Net Metering

"Sell Excess Energy & Earn Money"

What is net metering?

Net metering is an agreement that allows the solar PV system owner to sell excess solar energy to the utility company or buy deficit energy from the utility company using a meter to track this energy exchange.

Case 1: If at any moment of time, if solar energy generation (kWh) is less than the load requirement at that time, the difference of energy is taken from the main grid and the meter runs forward, as usual. In this case, the system owner is charged for the units (kWh) consumed from the main grid. Eg. During early morning or during late evening/night.

Case 2: If at any moment of time, if solar energy generation (kWh) is more than the load requirement at that time, the excess solar energy is fed back to the main grid and the meter now runs backward. In this case, the system owner gets credit for the units (kWh) fed back to the main grid. Eg. During peak sunshine hours (afternoon).

Advantages of Net Metering:

  • Financial benefit for the system owner
  • Avoid the use of batteries
  • Produce more today, use that tomorrow

A grid-connected photovoltaic power system, or grid-connected PV system

A grid-connected photovoltaic power system, or grid-connected PV system is an electricity generating solar PV system that is connected to the utility grid. A grid-connected PV system consists of solar panels, one or several inverters, a power conditioning unit and grid connection equipment. They range from small residential and commercial rooftop systems to large utility-scale solar power stations. Unlike stand-alone power systems, a grid-connected system rarely includes an integrated battery solution, as they are still very expensive. When conditions are right, the grid-connected PV system supplies the excess power, beyond consumption by the connected load, to the utility grid.

OFF-GRID CONNECTED SOLAR:

Off-grid connected solar is a solar electricity system with battery backup. During the day the sun shines and charges the batteries as well as supplies power to your home. During the evening or on rainy days when the sun isn't shining you use the power stored in the batteries. Your house is not connected to the national grid hence the name: off-grid.

GRID-TIED SOLAR:

Grid-tied or grid connected solar is a solar electricity system without batteries. Your home is hooked up to both the national grid and your PowerSmart solar electricity system, so you will always have electricity available at the flick of a switch; even at night, or if it is cloudy. You can install a solar electricity system of any size and you will only ever be billed if your power consumption is in excess of the amount you are generating.

The electricity grid acts as a 100% efficient and maintenance free battery while also providing unlimited on demand energy. This is what makes grid connected solar electricity so attractive. It has all the benefits of being attached to the electricity grid but with a portion of your electricity bill never increasing in price.

However we do offer grid-connect solar power systems with back-up for customers with special requirements.
